The westerly state of California is an especially sunny spot and Oakland is well-placed for day trips, being close to some of the biggest and best attractions that California has to offer. For breathtaking golf courses, beaches and related coastal attractions close to Oakland, the Monterey Bay area is hard to beat and encompasses both Big Sur and Carmel by the Sea (Carmel). Wine lovers should head northwards and immerse themselves in the laid back culture of California's winemaking capital.
